Bose Market Share Statistics in the EU
The March 2024 comparison covers sales volume in 14 EU Member States. These are brand-share estimates aggregated from cited Statista and Euromonitor data, so they are not Bose global share, revenue share or total unit sales.
| Category and brand | Sales-volume share | Period and geography |
|---|---|---|
| Headphones — Sony | 13.2% | March 2024, 14 EU Member States |
| Headphones — JBL | 11.7% | March 2024, 14 EU Member States |
| Headphones — Bose | 9.3% | March 2024, 14 EU Member States |
| Headphones — soundcore | 8.2% | March 2024, 14 EU Member States |
| Headphones — AirPods | 4.2% | March 2024, 14 EU Member States |
Source: Preparatory study for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation: Repairability – Phase I. The table compares brands within headphones, not all personal audio.
Earphones and earbuds are separate categories in the comparison. Sony led earphones at 14.7% and JBL followed at 11.6%, while Beats accounted for 9.2% of earphone sales volume; for earbuds, AirPods led at 30.2%, followed by Samsung at 7.2% and soundcore at 6.0%.
These category distinctions matter for interpreting Bose’s 9.3% headphone estimate. A headphone share cannot be treated as an earbud share, and none of these figures measures Bose’s worldwide position.
Bose Market Scale, Ownership and Category Trends
The EU market model projects headphone and earphone unit volume to rise from about 68 million units in 2025 to more than 72 million in 2030. The forecast covers on-ear, earbud and over-ear headphones and excludes hearing aids.
| Measure | Figure | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| EU headphone and earphone volume | About 68 million units | 2025 estimate, EU-27 |
| EU headphone and earphone volume | More than 72 million units | 2030 forecast, EU-27 |
| Earbuds | 81% of sales volume | 2025 estimate, 14-country EU data |
| Headsets | 13% of sales volume | 2025 estimate, 14-country EU data |
| Earphones | 6% of sales volume | 2025 estimate, 14-country EU data |
The same study reports EU VR-headphone sales of 3.65 million units in 2025 and forecasts 5.46 million units in 2030. VR headphones are a related category, not a measure of Bose’s total conventional headphone market.
Consumer ownership is based on an IPSOS/JRC perception survey in Spain, Poland and the Netherlands. In 2025, 62% of surveyed respondents owned or had owned headphones, while 68% owned or had owned earphones or earbuds; both results are self-reported and do not identify Bose ownership.
The market-scale and survey figures are reported in the JRC preparatory study. Survey ownership is not the same as current possession, purchase frequency or brand adoption.
Bose Prices, Portability and Online Sales Data
The 2025 EU model estimated the average headphone and earphone price at about €76 per unit. This is a combined category average, not a Bose average selling price.
Desktop devices represented about 56% of the EU headphone and earphone market in 2025, compared with about 44% for mobile devices. Those percentages describe the cited model’s desktop/mobile segmentation rather than a product-ownership survey.
Online channels represented 38.6% of headphone and earphone revenue in the EU in 2025, and that share was forecast to reach 44.7% by 2028. These are revenue shares, not unit shares and not Bose-specific e-commerce results.
| Measure | 2025 | Later period |
|---|---|---|
| Average headphone and earphone price | About €76 per unit | — |
| Desktop market segment | About 56% | — |
| Mobile market segment | About 44% | — |
| Online revenue share | 38.6% | 44.7% forecast in 2028 |
| Average VR-headset price | €282 per unit | €385 forecast in 2030 |
The VR-headset prices are included for category context only. They do not describe Bose pricing or conventional headphones.
All market, price and channel figures in this section come from the JRC preparatory study, whose estimates and forecasts use their own category definitions.
Bose Product Lifetime and Repair Statistics
The 2025 survey distinguishes expected lifetime from recalled lifetime after a failure. Expected lifetime assumes no damage, loss or theft, while recalled lifetime covers respondents whose headphones or earphones stopped working in the previous five years.
| Product group and measure | Under 3 years | 3 to 5 years | Population |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headphones expected lifetime | 16% | 30% | Survey n=665 |
| Headphones recalled before breakdown | 35% | 37% | Failure group n=393 |
| Earphones/earbuds expected lifetime | 20% | 31% | Survey n=685 |
| Earphones/earbuds recalled before breakdown | 43% | 35% | Failure group n=458 |
These are consumer survey measures in Spain, Poland and the Netherlands, not measured engineering lifetimes for Bose products. The recalled-failure results should not be read as a Bose failure rate.
Among headphone respondents, audio-related components were reported as the failure reason by 28%, while external components and connectors were reported by 20%. Hardware, software and decreased performance together accounted for 61% of reported reasons for replacing headphones; the source describes these as perception-survey categories, not causal laboratory findings.
The France FNAC DARTY repair-barometer measure found that spare parts for noise-cancelling wireless headphones averaged 100% of product price, excluding VAT as defined by the source. In the same repair context, 86% of headphone repairs required spare parts, while noise-cancelling wireless-earbud spare parts averaged 51% of product price and non-noise-cancelling wireless-earbud spare parts averaged 9%.
The lifetime and repair evidence is reported in the JRC preparatory study. The repair-barometer ratios are not Bose-specific and the headphone and earbud measures should not be merged.
Bose Listening Levels and Safe-Exposure Statistics
WHO safe-listening figures are public-health guidance examples, not measurements of Bose devices. The permitted exposure time falls as average sound level rises.
| Average level | WHO example limit | Period and scope |
|---|---|---|
| 80 dB | 40 hours per week | WHO guidance accessed 2026 |
| 85 dB | 12 hours 30 minutes per week | WHO guidance accessed 2026 |
| 90 dB | 4 hours per week | WHO guidance accessed 2026 |
| 95 dB | 1 hour 15 minutes per week | WHO guidance accessed 2026 |
| 100 dB | 20 minutes per week | WHO guidance accessed 2026 |
| 105 dB | 8 minutes per week | WHO guidance accessed 2026 |
| 110 dB | 2.5 minutes per week | WHO guidance accessed 2026 |
WHO also recommends keeping device volume below 60% of maximum and resting the ears for 10 minutes after every hour in loud clubs, games or concerts. Individual susceptibility and exposure patterns vary, so these examples should not be treated as a Bose product safety certification.

Bose Product and Patent Statistics
Bose’s official patent-marking document lists associated US patents or design patents for individual products. These counts are entries in the marking list, not a count of all Bose patents or a measure of product quality.
| Bose product listing | Listed US patents | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| A20 Aviation Headset | 14 | Patents or reissue patents |
| A30 Aviation Headset | 38 | Patents or design patents |
| AE2w Bluetooth headphones | 2 | Associated US patents |
| Bose around-ear headphones | 1 | Associated US design patent |
| Bose Bluetooth headset | 20 | Displayed product row before Series 2 continuation line |
The patent-marking document says additional US applications and non-US patents may also apply. Its counts therefore provide product-specific context rather than a complete Bose innovation inventory.

Bose’s official Our History: A Timeline of Innovation states that the company remains committed to its founding principles since 1964 and refers to millions of customers. That historical description is qualitative context; the quantified patent entries above are the directly countable product-listing measures in this overview.
